The Gullfoss waterfall is often called the Golden Waterfall because its spray takes on a golden color in the sunlight. However, regardless of the weather, this 100 foot high waterfall cascading down a narrow canyon is an impressive sight.
Located 75 miles east of Reykjavik, the Hyvita Rriver first flows down a curving three step cascade. It then plunges into a narrow crevice about 66 feet wide and a mile and a half long. The powerful flow creates a spray that drifts upward and often encompasses the viewing areas adjacent to the falls. The falls is owned and protected by the government of Iceland. |
