Picture
Ireland is an attractive yet underrated European cruise destination.  It has a long history but is surprisingly unspoiled.  As a result, it has both beautiful scenery and culture.  In addition, the people are quite friendly.

As British Isles cruises have become more and more popular, more and more ships have been calling in Ireland.  The most frequently visited port is Cobh, formerly called Queenstown.  Located outside of Cork City, this relatively small town is a gateway for excursions into the interior of the island.  In recent years, the metropolitan centers of Dublin and Belfast have also been attracting ships.

Ireland is the second largest island in the British Isles.

Politically, Ireland is divided into the Republic of Ireland, with its capital in Dublin, and Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom.

Both in size and population, the Republic is bigger.  Its population is about 4.8 million while the population of the North is approximately 1.8 million.

The currency in the Republic is the Euro while in the North, the currency is the British pound sterling.  Credit cards are widely accepted throughout the island.

The official language in the Republic is Gaelic.  However, just about everyone speaks English and even the official signs are in both Gaelic and English.
