GREAT STIRRUP CAY

IMAGES OF THE PAST

GSC has come a long way in just a few years.  It has been transformed from a castaway experience to a sophisticated resort.

Prior to Norwegian's revitalization of GSC, guests landed on the island in Bertram's Cove. There was no dock.  Instead, guests stormed ashore as in a John Wayne movie when the ramp on the landing craft was lowered.  The dining facilities and bars were not impressive.  Still, most people had a good time.

Picture
The area where the new beaches are now was completely undeveloped.  Indeed, the Bobolink beach area (right) was essentially a tidal pond.

The transformation did not take place over night but rather has been an ongoing process that has been surprisingly unobtrusive on the guest experience.

Hurricane Sandy in 2012 added to the difficulties of doing large scale construction on a relatively remote island.
Consequently, the improvements unfolded over time.  For example, consider Cabana Beach in 2011 (below), Cabana beach in 2012 (right) and Cabana Beach in 2013 (below right) versus the way it looks now (see new beaches page).

Temporary facilities came and went. Below: A mobile bar unit on the new beaches in 2013.  Below right: Temporary information booths in 2012.

In addition to new areas, the original area was improved significantly.  With the opening of the tender port, tenders no longer came into Bertram's Cove and there was more beach for guests to use.  (Left: Bertram's Beach 2011).  New dining facilities improved the culinary aspect of the island. (Below: Jumbey's 2012).

Great Stirrup Cay is not complete.  Work continues on the far side of the island as well as beyond Bobolink beach.  Thus, there is more to come.
