The first permanent settlement in Bermuda, St. George is full of historic buildings as well as charm. Accordingly, it has been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
It is smaller than Hamilton and is more of a town than a city. St Peter's Church (left) is the oldest Anglican Church outside of the British Isles and the oldest Protestant church in continuous use in the New World. It has been a place of worship since 1612. |
In King's Square, St. George's main square, there is a recreation of the sailing ship Deliverance. It was built in 1610 by English settlers who had been shipwrecked on Bermuda while on their way to Jamestown in America. They were the first people to inhabit the islands and their exploits led to its colonization.
Visitors can also try out the stocks in King's Square, which were an early form of punishment in the colony. A ducking stool is nearby. The Town Hall at one end of the square is still the seat of local government in St. George.
